Memorial Days & The Bible

In America, Memorial Day is a time to pause and reflect. Families gather, flags are lowered, and lives laid down in war are honored. It’s a day built around memory—remembrance of sacrifice.

But long before governments set aside days of remembrance, YAH Himself established memorials for His people. In Scripture, we see over and over that YAH calls His people to remember—the works of His own hands, the redemption He provides, and the hope He secures.

The true “God of the Bible”, the only true Elohim, the Most High YAH, has given us memorial days to celebrate each year. It is disheartening to see how pastors across the USA lead their congregations in honoring and remembering deceased service members while neglecting to honor and remember the living Elohim whom they profess to love above all.

YAH’s Days of Remembrance

In the 23rd chapter of Leviticus, we find the complete list of holidays/holy days that The Most High YAH has designated as memorial days for us to remember and celebrate each year. The first holiday listed is the weekly Shabbat, or Sabbath day. This day is the same one that the Ten Commandments instruct us to observe as a memorial day, set apart from the other days of the week, just as The Most High Himself did.

If you have never remembered, celebrated, or learned about the biblical memorial days, I encourage you to read the summary chapter in Leviticus 23 today. These days are not only mentioned in that one chapter; they are referenced throughout the entire Bible. However, Leviticus 23 provides a great overview of each of our Father’s memorial days.

If you’re new to this topic or were taught that these days no longer matter because of the crucifixion and resurrection of the Messiah, it’s important to note that the apostle Paul (Shaul) disagrees. He wrote to us after the resurrection and ascension of the Messiah and reminded us numerous times in his epistles that our Father’s memorial days still hold significance. Like him, we should keep, celebrate, and remember the meaning of each of the memorial days of the Most High YAH. HalleluYAH!

See Leviticus 23, and know that these days all point to The Messiah. The Messiah remembered and celebrated each of these memorial days, as did His disciples and apostles… And if we follow Him, we must remember to keep these days set apart too.

Again, YAH’s holy days, the cycle of life He commanded His people to keep, are not man-made holidays. Here is a quick list about His Spring holydays:

  • Passover—is a memorial of YAH’s mighty deliverance from Egypt and, in Yahoshua, a greater deliverance through His blood—the Lamb of Elohim.
  • Unleavened Bread—reminds us of the call to walk without sin.
  • First Fruits—proclaims The Messiah’s resurrection, the first to rise never to die again.
  • Pentecost—reminds us of the giving of YAH’s Torah and the outpouring of YAH’s Spirit.

Those spring feasts above remind us of what YAH has done through His Messiah. But His memorials don’t stop there. The Fall biblical holydays (Day of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Feast of Tabernacles) point us to what He will do: The Messiah’s return, judgment, restoration, and dwelling with His people forever.

The Power of Biblical Memorial Days

Unlike national holidays that fade once the day passes, YAH’s appointed times shape our lives throughout the year. They don’t just stir emotion—they anchor us in our Father’s covenant promises. YAH’s holydays point back to His mighty acts and forward to His future redemption.

When we honor YAH’s memorials, we enter a cycle of remembrance that keeps our focus on Him—not on governments, not on nations, but on The Elohim who redeems.

A Weightier Memorial Days

So Americans pause on Memorial Day in the USA, let it remind us of something greater: YAH’s established days of remembrance for His people. Days that call us to reflect not only on sacrifice, but also on deliverance, victory, and the hope of The Messiah’s return.

The world has its memorials. YAH has His. And His are eternal.

A Closing Reminder

As we think on Memorial Days, let us never forget the cycles YAH built into our lives: work and rest. Just as He calls us to remember His mighty acts, He also calls us to labor faithfully and then rest in Him. He established the weekly Shabbat (Sabbath)—a set-apart day not only to cease from our work, but to rejoice in His work.

That cycle of labor and rest is something I often write about, and one of these days, I plan to write about America’s Labor Day—the cultural “unofficial end of summer”—and how it can also remind us of YAH’s design: that our work matters, and that true rest comes only in Him, not in days established by men.

A couple of years ago, we remembered the origins of the USA’s Memorial Day in this blog linked below.

I believe that Scripture is key to understanding this thing we call life: “ALL Scripture is breathed out by Elohim (God) and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for setting straight, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of Elohim might be fitted, equipped for every good work.” ‭‭Timotiyos Bĕt (2 Timothy)‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭TS2009‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/316/2ti.3.16-17.TS2009 And that everything we do in life will be judged by The Creator of life, so it's best to understand the conclusion of The Matter: “Let us hear the CONCLUSION OF THE ENTIRE MATTER: FEAR ELOHIM AND GAURD (KEEP) HIS COMMANDS, for this applies to ALL mankind! For Elohim SHALL bring EVERY work into right-ruling (judgment), including ALL that is hidden, whether good or whether evil.” ‭‭Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes)‬ ‭12‬:‭13‬-‭14‬ ‭TS2009‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/316/ecc.12.13-14.TS2009
