Welcome back to our thought-provoking series where we examine and debunk some of the outright lies and common misconceptions that are told concerning biblical matters. Let us separate fact from fiction as we test modern beliefs held by some against the standards, wisdom, and instructions that are found in the Biblical Scriptures.
A widespread doctrine, that many profess today is “we’re saved by grace alone through faith alone,” often implying that obedience to the Father’s commands—even “The Ten Commandments”—is optional or no longer required. But is that truly what Scripture teaches?
Let’s examine this popular teaching through a Hebrew lens and test whether this belief stands firm in the light of YAH’s Word—or if it’s yet another Biblical misconception. First, here is the claim:
Did you catch those slick additions to the Scriptures? One word should have especially stood out: “ALONE”. Read each screenshot above again. So, is it one one those things “alone” or five of those things “alone”? More importantly, what book, chapter, and verse of Scripture said that? The concept of the “Five Solas” is unbiblical. Nowhere in Scripture does it say that we are saved through faith alone, grace alone, or by Scripture alone in the way these doctrines suggest. These phrases reflect man-made theology, not the truth of YAH’s Word. So let’s get into it:
1. What Does “Grace” Really Mean?
The Greek word charis, commonly translated as grace, is often understood as “unmerited favor.” But the Hebrew word and concept—ḥen (חֵן)—carries a deeper, more relational meaning. It implies favor shown in response to humility, righteousness, and a willingness to obey.
“But Noah found ḥen in the eyes of YAH.”
Genesis 6:8
Yet Noach didn’t just receive grace and then do nothing. He walked with Elohim (v.9) and did all that Elohim commanded him (v.22). His favor came with faithful action and obedience.
The apostle Paul’s words from Ephesians 2:8-9 are often partially quoted and used independently of the rest of the Scriptures to build an entire doctrine:
“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of YAH, not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
First, you see that Paul doesn’t say grace ALONE or faith ALONE! Secondly, most people stop reading and/or misquoting at verse 9, and it’s especially sad because the very next verse is crucial to the complete and contextual point that Paul makes:
“For we are YAH’s workmanship, created in Messiah Yahoshua to do good works, which YAH prepared in advance as our way of life (works to do).”
Ephesians 2:10
This understating of salvation (Ephesians 2:8) is not the finish line—it’s the starting point for a transformed life, a life reborn & renewed. And that life is marked by obedience to YAH. In Hebrew, emunah (אֱמוּנָה), translated as “faith,” means steadfast trust, loyalty, and faithfulness—not just belief, but action tied directly to obeying YAH’s Word.
3. The Messiah Taught Obedience To Torah
Yahoshua never taught us to abandon, abolish, or disobey the Father’s commands and instructions (Torah). He made it clear:
“Do NOT think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have NOT come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.
So then, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do likewise will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever practices and teaches (KEEPS) them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:17, 19
And again:
“IF you love Me, KEEP My commands.”
John 14:15
The Messiah taught complete love for and obedience to the Father’s will—not some unbiblical notion of freedom from obedience to His will & Word.
4. The Messiah’s Followers Taught Obedience To Torah
The disciples and apostles also continued walking after and teaching like The Messiah—obedience to Torah is THE WAY! Let’s quickly remember a few examples, and we will start with the words from The Messiah’s brother:
“What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no works/deeds? Can such faith save him? So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. O foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is worthless? Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith was working with his actions, and his faith was perfected by what he did. And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed YAH, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called a friend of YAH. As you can see, a man is justified by his deeds and not by faith alone. As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.” James 2:14, 17-18, 20-24, 26
We remember the prime definition of LOVE, from John:
“For this is the love of YAH, that we keep His commandments (as found in Torah). And His commandments are not burdensome,” 1 John 5:3 BSB
And of course, we must remember the emphatic declaration from the Apostle Paul:
“Do we, then, nullify the Torah by our faith? Certainly NOT! Instead, we uphold the Torah.” Romans 3:31
5. The Messiah’s Blood Did Not Cancel Obedience
Yes, Yahoshua’s blood redeems us. But from what? He certainly didn’t shed His blood so that we could continue to live in sin. Speaking of sin, what is sin? Simply put, sin is the breaking of YAH’s Torah, His laws, commandments, and instructions:
“Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.” 1 John 3:4
Again, how can anyone claim to be “saved” from sin while continuing in the very thing Yahoshua came to deliver us from? That’s not biblical, nor is it rooted in Scripture. That’s not faith—it’s self-deception.
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Yahoshua Messiah, The Righteous One. He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: IF WE KEEP His commandments. If anyone says, “I know Him,” but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone keeps His Word (Torah), the love of YAH has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him: Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Yahoshua walked.” 1 John 2:1-6
6. A Pattern of Obedient Faith
The ones YAH favored throughout Scripture weren’t perfectly perfect—but they were faithful to YAH’s word, they obeyed His instructions (Torah). Let’s first remember the actions of the so-called “Patriarch of our faith”, Abraham, who was counted righteous not only because he believed or obeyed, but because he believed and obeyed:
“Abram believed YAH, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Genesis 15:6
“because Abraham listened to (obeyed) My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws (Torah).”
Genesis 26:5
Moses led Yisrael to receive and walk in the covenant at Mt. Sinai—covenant living built upon obedience to the Ten Commandments.
Yahoshua walked in perfect obedience, believing and teaching Torah and calling us to do the same.
7. The End-Time Testimony: Obedience + Faith
Scripture tells us exactly who the faithful are in the end, and what they must do to be saved:
“Here is the endurance of the set-apart ones (aka Saints): those who keep the commandments of YAH AND have the belief of Yahoshua.” – Revelation 14:12
It’s not a one-or-the-other condition, it is a Both-And requirement!
8. Grace Is Not a License to Sin
Paul had to confront this twisted way of thinking even in his time, remembering the last verse above, he further built upon it by saying:
“What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly NOT!” – Romans 6:15
Grace and faith do not replace obedience—they empower us to walk in righteousness. Through obedience to YAH, we are no longer under the penalty of the law. In other words, we are no longer subject to the ultimate consequence of breaking YAH’s righteous laws, commands, and instructions (Torah)—which is the second death.
“For the wages of sin is death (the eternal 2nd death), but the gift of YAH is eternal life in Messiah Yahoshua our King.” Romans 6:23
On the day of Judgement, Yahoshua will judge each of us, not by what we believed, but according to His words in Scripture, He will judge according to what we do:
“Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one according to what he hasdone.” Revelation 22:12
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, BUT only he who does the will (obey’s Torah)of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness (you who break YAH’s Torah)!’” Matthew 7:21-23
Conclusion
The idea that “we are saved by grace alone through faith” while continuing to break YAH’s commands is not Biblical—it’s a misconception. Yahoshua did NOT free us so we could remain in sin & rebellion. He did not give us the freedom to sin. He freed us from our sins, to walk renewed as sons and daughters, in righteousness and truth. His blood atones for our sin, but we cannot continue to sin and trample His blood! Meditate on Hebrews chapter 10
Yes, we are saved by grace through faith, and No, we cannot earn our salvation—BUT we can lose it through disobedience to The One who saves us. So, remain in His grace by keeping the faith and walking in obedience to His instructions—Torah!
Let’s reject the lawless version of misunderstood grace, and let us return to the covenant—YAH’s eternal agreement of love, faithfulness, and obedience to His Word. Let’s realign with the Father’s will, and His instructions (Torah). Not through empty religion or man-made traditions, but through faithful obedience to His eternal commands—sealed by the blood of Yahoshua and lived out in truth.

I blog about things that we often all see around us, things that we see in person, online, or on TV— and I offer functional & Scriptural perspectives on such matters. I believe that Scripture is key to understanding this thing we call life:
“ALL Scripture is breathed out by Elohim (God) and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for setting straight, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of Elohim might be fitted, equipped for every good work.”
Timotiyos Bĕt (2 Timothy) 3:16-17 TS2009 https://bible.com/bible/316/2ti.3.16-17.TS2009
And that everything we do in life will be judged by The Creator of life, so it's best to understand the conclusion of The Matter:
“Let us hear the CONCLUSION OF THE ENTIRE MATTER: FEAR ELOHIM AND GAURD (KEEP) HIS COMMANDS, for this applies to ALL mankind! For Elohim SHALL bring EVERY work into right-ruling (judgment), including ALL that is hidden, whether good or whether evil.”
