Why Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 Should Be Read Often and Together
“And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”
Luke 21:28
Every generation has looked at the events unfolding around them and wondered whether they were witnessing the signs The Messiah, Yahoshua foretold.
Today is no different.
Hardly a week passes without reports of another major earthquake, more devastating floods, wildfires, droughts, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, or other natural disasters. Wars continue across multiple continents while rumors of even greater conflicts dominate the headlines. Food insecurity grows. Pestilences continue to remind us how fragile the nations truly are. All the while, growing calamity and economic uncertainty affects families around the world.
Perhaps more concerning than any of these is the increasing confusion surrounding truth itself. Deception has become so commonplace that many no longer know whom, or what to believe anymore.
As followers of The Messiah, these headlines should cause us to pause—not because they should fill us with fear, but because they should cause us to remember. Yahoshua spoke of these things long before they appeared in today’s news and social media posts.
Our focus should not be, “Can we find today’s headlines in prophecy?” The better question is, “What did Yahoshua actually tell His disciples to watch for?”
To answer that question faithfully, we must resist the temptation to read only a partial Scriptural account. Let us listen, more fully, to these three pertinent witness accounts.
One Conversation. Three Witnesses.
The prophecy recorded in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 is often studied as though it were three similar but different teachings. It isn’t.
These chapters preserve the same conversation, spoken by the same Messiah, on the same Mount of Olives, to the same disciples. Each writer records the discourse from his own perspective, preserving details that complement—not contradict—the others. That should immediately remind us of something familiar from the Torah. YAH established that every matter should be confirmed by two or three witnesses.
“… At the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
Deuteronomy 19:15
It is therefore fitting that one of the most important prophetic teachings in Scripture has been preserved for us through three witnesses. Not three different prophecies. Three witnesses establishing one prophecy. When these accounts are studied together, they produce a richer understanding than any one account alone.
Rather than asking which Gospel account is “best,” we should ask what each witness contributes to the whole. Matthew preserves the fullest form of the disciples’ questions, giving us the broadest framework of the discourse. Mark repeatedly calls believers to remain alert, watchful, and ready. Luke records the clearest description of Jerusalem’s coming judgment while continuing the narrative beyond it toward the coming of the Son of Man.
None of the three competes with one another, but together, they strongly establish the matter.
The Questions That Started It All
Let us never forget, that this entire discourse begins with something surprisingly ordinary. The disciples are admiring the Temple. To them, it appears marvelous and unshakable. To Yahoshua, its destruction is most certain. He declares that not one stone will remain upon another. So naturally, the disciples want to know more.
Matthew preserves their questions in their fullest form:
- “When shall these things be?”
- “What shall be the sign of Thy coming?”
- “And what shall be the sign of the end of the age?”
Those questions shape everything that follows.
As we continue reading, it becomes clear that Yahoshua’s answer moves between the coming destruction of Jerusalem, recurring prophetic patterns, and the ultimate fulfillment that will accompany His return.
Now, this layered nature of prophecy is not unusual. Throughout Scripture, YAH repeatedly teaches through historical events that become patterns for future generations:
- The Exodus became a pattern of redemption.
- Babylon became a pattern of rebellion against YAH.
- The wilderness became a pattern of testing.
And so we see the destruction of Jerusalem became both a historical judgment and a prophetic reminder that YAH warns His people before judgment comes.
History does not simply repeat itself. It often echoes. And Scripture teaches us how to recognize those echoes.
What the King Wanted Us to Watch For
One of the greatest mistakes we can make when studying this prophecy is beginning where Yahoshua did not.
Many people immediately turn what’s happening “now”, into “the starting sign”, for instance, while I’m writing this, the biggest news is earthquakes. Others focus on wars. Others famines, diseases, or other disasters. Still others spend countless hours trying to identify the rising and falling of political leaders, governments, or future kingdoms.
Yet that is not where our King began.
His first warning was neither military nor geological, not natural or physical. It was spiritual.
“Take heed that no man deceive you.”
Those words appear at the very beginning of all three accounts.

Before speaking of:
- Kingdoms
- Wars
- Famines
- Persecution
- Earthquakes
- Heavenly signs
Yahoshua warns His disciples about deception.
That should tell us something. If The Messiah chose to begin there, perhaps we should too. Throughout Scripture, deception has always been one of Satan’s most effective weapons. In the Garden of Eden, he twisted the Word of YAH. Likewise in the wilderness, he worked through twisted people, against YAH’s Word.
Throughout Israel’s history, false prophets continually rose among the people, speaking peace when judgment was near and encouraging compromise instead of covenant faithfulness.
The Messiah and His disciples after Him repeatedly highlighted the same warning against twistings from:
- False messiahs
- False prophets
- False teachers
- Counterfeit righteousness
- Counterfeit worship
- Counterfeit gospels
- Counterfeit miracles.
The greatest danger is not simply that deception exists. It is that Yahoshua says MANY will be deceived.
That alone should cause every believer to examine what they believe—not by tradition, popularity, thought, or feeling, but by the written Word of YAH.
Only after warning about deception does Yahoshua begin describing what He calls “the beginning of sorrows”:
- Wars
- Rumors of wars
- Nation rising against nation
- Kingdom against kingdom
- Famines
- Pestilences
- Earthquakes in diverse places.
Yet, even here He tells His disciples something many people overlook.
“The end is not yet.”
Remember, all these calamities are not presented as the finish line… They are the beginning.
The phrase “beginning of sorrows” literally describes birth pains. Every parent especially understands the imagery. The first contraction does not mean the child arrives the next second. It means the process has begun. As labor progresses, the contractions become more frequent. More intense. Closer together. The birth pains do not announce the exact moment of delivery. They announce that the appointed time is drawing nearer.
Is this what Yahoshua wants His disciples to understand?
Not that every earthquake signals His immediate return. Not that every world war fulfills the end of this age prophecy. But that these events would signal the age and increase as history moves toward His return.
That perspective must never be overlooked or forgotten.
Instead of chasing headlines, we watch patterns. Instead of trying to predict dates, we recognize birth pains. Instead of living in fear, we live with expectation, because we know what ultimately comes next — HalleluYAH!
Watching the Birth Pains Increase

As I write this, the world continues to experience many of the very conditions Yahoshua described.

Earthquakes continue to strike in diverse places. Communities rebuild after earthquakes, only to face floods, fires, and more fear. Wars and escalations continue in Europe, the so-called Middle East, Africa, and Asia, while new conflicts threaten to draw additional nations into battle. Economic uncertainty affects nearly every continent. Food insecurity continues to grow. Disease outbreaks remind us how quickly life can change.
Perhaps most concerning of all is the increasing confusion surrounding truth itself. We can hardly believe what we hear and see these days. And even on personal levels, truth has become negotiable. Dysfunction and falsehood are celebrated. And most unfortunately, most who claim to speak for The Most High openly contradict His Word.
Does this prove we are living in the final generation? Scripture does not authorize us to unequivocally make the declaration that it will be over by such-and-such many days. Yahoshua Himself reminds us, in fact, that no man knows the day or the hour (Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:32).
At the same time, He did not tell us these things so we would ignore them. He told us beforehand so that when we began seeing these conditions, these signs unfold, we would remember His words and obey Him.
That is a very different mindset. The disciple is not consumed by fear nor ignorance. Disciples are not to be asleep, but awake. Watching. Remembering. Trusting in and obeying YAH! And it’s an easy-to-build and keep mindset, not because we know exactly when out King will return, but because we know that our King always keeps His promises.
Living Between the Warning and the Return
Whether Yahoshua returns in our lifetime or in a generation yet to come, His instructions remain the same. He never told His disciples to become consumed with speculation. He never told them to spend their days trying to calculate dates or identify every event in the news.
He told them to watch. Watching, however, is much more than simply giving attention to world events. A watchman is not merely someone who sees danger. A watchman warns.
A servant is not merely someone who knows his master’s plans. A servant remains faithful in duty while his master is away. That is the heartbeat of the so-called Olivet Discourse.
- Watch.
- Endure.
- Do not be deceived.
- Do not be afraid.
- Remain faithful.
As the birth pains increase, our confidence should not decrease but rather increase. Again, not because we know exactly when our King will appear, but because every fulfilled promise reminds us that the promises still awaiting fulfillment are just as certain.
The news headlines and social media posts should not become our compass. The Scriptures should.
The nations will continue to rage. Kingdoms will continue to rise and fall. The earth itself will continue to groan. But the Word of YAH remains steadfast. Just as Yahoshua said:

The world sees uncertainty. The disciple remembers certainty. The world sees chaos. The disciple remembers Thr King already told us these things would happen. The world is looking for someone to explain the headlines. The people of YAH should be pointing people back to The Scriptures.
Perhaps that is one of the greatest purposes of these three witnesses. Again:
- Matthew gives us the broadest framework of the questions the disciples asked.
- Mark repeatedly reminds us to remain watchful.
- Luke preserves the historical warning concerning Jerusalem while carrying our eyes forward to the coming of The Son of Man.
Together they establish one unified testimony. One prophecy from One King. The signs were never given so that we would become obsessed with the future. They were given so that we would remain faithful in the present.
So, are we witnessing the signs of the times?
It certainly appears that we are witnessing many of the very conditions our King described. Whether these are the final birth pains or only the beginning of them, time will reveal.
But that is not the most important question. The more important question for each of us is this:
If our King returned today, would He find us watching as He said… or merely watching the news?
Would He find us faithfully keeping the commandments of YAH? Would He find us holding fast to His testimony? Would He find us loving one another, proclaiming the coming Kingdom, and enduring until the end?
Those are some of the questions His recorded discourse should leaves us with.
May we never become so fascinated with the signs that we forget The One to whom the signs are pointing. May we be found awake, sober, and faithful. May we be found doing The Kingdom work and being about our Father’s business until the day our King appears in His glory.
The wars will increase, the quakes will to, along with the other worldwide calamities. We can’t stop it, but we must endure through it all in obedience to YAH. Stay strong in Him family and remind yourself often:
“But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.” Matthew 24:13
“… But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.” Mark 13:13
“By your patient endurance you will gain your souls.” Luke 21:19
“Here is a call for the perseverance of the saints, who keep the commandments of YAH and the faith of Yahoshua.” Revelation 14:12
Until next time, shalom ✌🏾
